Callide Dawson Carcase Competition 2012 – Bazadais Win Again

Congratulations again to Keith and Bev Lacey and Eddie and Donna Wales. The Bazadais cross have taken many of the prizes in this competition following up on their wins from 2011 & 2010.

They took out many prizes at the recent Callide Dawson carcase competition (their third year in a row) with their Bazadais cross cattle.

Keith and Bev Lacey had exceptional results winning with their Bazadais Brahman cross and Bazadais Droughtmaster cross cattle.

Their wins include:

  • Most Successful Exhibitor
  • Grand Champion Carcase (out of 416 head of cattle)
  • Champion Grainfed Heifer
  • 1st and 2nd Single Grainfed Heifer
  • 3rd with a pen of Grain Fed Steers
  • 3rd with a Pen of Grainfed Steers

Keith and Bev Lacey had fanatastic showing winning Most Successful Exhibitor, Grand Champion Carcase (out of 416 head of cattle), Champion Grainfed Heifer, 1st and 2nd Single Grainfed Heifer, 3rd with a pen of Grain Fed Steers, and 3rd with a Pen of Grainfed Steers.

Bazadais Brahman cross cattle from Wales Grazing Co., Biloela achieved the following excellent results:

  • Champion and Reserve Champion Grainfed Steer
  • 2nd Single Grainfed Steer
  • 2nd with a Pen of Grainfed Steers

The Champion and Reserve Champion came out of the pen of three. All cattle including the ones in pens are judged individually as well. It was just unfortunate that one of the three let him down in the pen.

Gympie Carcase Classic 2011

Carcase with the Highest Eye Muscle Area

Chris and Marianne Wyllie (pictured above) of Wyllie Bazadais at Gympie have been entering the Carcase Classic for a couple of years and this time they were ecstatic to find their Bazadais cross steer had won the Highest Eye Muscle Area (EMA) from all entries in the competition.

The steer was a second cross Bazadais with one quarter Simmental and had a live weight of 368kg, dressed out at 230.4kg with a dressing percentage of 62.61% and an EMA of 115 sq cm.

 

Second Best Weight Gain in Feedlot

Alan and Jeannette Penney of Jenalan Bazadais Stud, Mulgildie won a second prize in the recent Gympie Carcase Classic for Best Weight Gain in Feedlot out of 100 head with a second cross Bazadais heifer.

The cattle were on grain for 70 days. She had an arrival weight of 265kg, a starting weight of 270kg and her finish weight was 420kg.

This gave her a 2.08kg per day weight gain for an overall total weight gain of 150kg. She had gained 55.56% of her original start weight.

Wingham Beef Week Carcase Competition 2010

Congratulations to Roy & Dorothy Laverty from Big Ben Bazadais at Taylors Arm, Mid North Coast NSW.

Roy & Dorothy exhibited 2 steers at Wingham Beef Week, which attracted mainly school entries from as far as Inverell and Scone and many schools in between. In a field of 9 middle weight steers Big Ben scored 1st and 3rd in carcase section. The steers were both 75% Bazadais, 25% Angus. The winning steer was just 15 months old.

It was very rewarding to see Bazadais make its mark. 3 yrs ago Big Ben also gained 1st & 3rd in the same competition with Bazadais cross steers.

Bazadais clean up at Callide Dawson Carcase Competition 2010

Congratulations to Alan and Jenette Penney who took out the Champion Grain Fed Steer Carcase and went on to to win the Grand Champion Carcase Overall.

The winning steer is a full blood Bazadais out of a Murray Grey cross cow. The steer started in the feedlot at 362kg and finished at 612kg.

  • HSCW: 319.2kg
  • P8 rump fat measurement: 12ml
  • Rib fat measurement: 10ml
  • Eye muscle: 96sqcm
  • Total carcase points: 158.54
  • Average daily weight gain: 2.5kg

Congratulations also to Keith and Bev Lacey who won Reserve Champion Grain Fed Heifer, 2nd place with a Pen of Grain Fed Heifers, and 2nd place in the Single Grain Fed Steer class.

This is the second year in a row that Keith and Bev have won the Reserve Champion Grain Fed Heifer class!

Beef 2009 National Carcase Competition

This competition is Australia wide and covered 21 abattoirs.

147 entries from WA, Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales to Nth Queensland.

2nd Pen of 3 Medium Trade Chiller Steers – 180 to 260 kg –  13 pens in the class

3rd Pen of 3 Export Bullocks – 300 to 420 kg  – 28 pens in the class.
